For instructions on how to adjust your thermostat see manual provided by the manufacturer of your unit. Your system should be set so you are comfortable when you are home and while you are away at work the house can be as cold or hot as you prefer. In order for your unit to remain efficient a few maintenance procedures should be performed regularly.

  • Have your heating and cooling systems professionally inspected every two years.

  • Inspect air filters in furnace/air conditioning system for dust. Clean and replace filters as needed. For the first year you own your home, replace the air filter every month. Afterwards, every other month.

  • Fall is a great time to clean your HVAC ducts. If it's been a while since that's been done, hire a professional duct cleaning service to handle this chore. If you've had it done within the last couple of years and you've been good about changing your filter, then all you should need to worry about is removing the register covers and vacuuming out the boots with a shop vacuum.

  • Maximize air flow to occupied parts of your home by adjusting the vents. When seasons change readjust them to make you comfortable.

  • If you live in a multi-level home, adjust the vents to evenly heat it. Partially close the vents on the upper level so more warm air will be directed to the lower level.

  • Always keep exterior doors and windows closed tightly. Draperies (especially insulated ones) will help to reduce your operating costs during peak heating or cooling seasons.
